ESPERANCE
1071. Hon JIM CHOWN to the minister representing the Minister
for Fisheries:
I
refer to a tagged bronze whaler shark that has recently been detected by a satellite
receiver at Esperance West Beach.
(1) How many
detections of the tagged bronze whaler shark at Esperance West Beach have there
been since 25 September 2018?
(2) Have any attempts been made to
relocate or remove this shark?
(3) Will the shark be moved out to
an alternative location?
(4) If no to (3), why not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for the question.
The Minister for Fisheries has provided the following information.
(1) There have been 483.
(2)–(3) No.
(4) The
relocation of sharks will be trialled during the non-lethal SMART drum line
trial off Gracetown, with no intention to apply such techniques more broadly at
this time. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will
continue to communicate real-time detections of tagged sharks to the community
via SharkSmart and the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
