❓ Mr Trenorden questions the Minister about funding for the Broome Port expansion, suggesting the application to the regional investment fund was a last resort. The Minister responds by stating the project requires joint funding with the Commonwealth, as per the previous government's stance.

QuestionView source ↗
With reference to the Broome Port Authority’s efforts over the past 12 months to get funding from the minister for an expansion and upgrade program to ensure the port’s long-term future, I ask - (1) Is the minister aware that, through an expression of interest, the Broome port has sought the funds it requires from the regional investment fund? (2) Does the minister acknowledge that the application for this funding, administered by a different minister, was a last-ditch attempt to secure funding for the port that the minister failed to provide as minister responsible for port authorities? Ms MacTIERNAN

(1)-(2) The $14 million expansion of the port facility at Broome has been proposed since the Leader of the National Party’s Government was in power. This Government has indicated that it is prepared to support this project on the same basis as did the previous Government; that is, through joint funding with the Commonwealth. It is true that this Government is considering a variety of funding sources, one of which is the regional investment fund, which is a whole-of-government facility that the Government is using to advance important regional projects. Our difficulty is that we are not getting any assistance whatsoever from the Commonwealth on these matters. The situation amounts to exactly the same as that reflected in the previous answer. When members opposite were in government they said that the area of disability services was the primary responsibility of the Commonwealth Government. The coalition Government said exactly the same thing about the Broome port expansion. That Government said that a $5 million contribution was required from the federal Government. This Government agrees. Mr Trenorden interjected. Ms MacTIERNAN: We are taking a bipartisan approach. This Government is taking the same approach as the previous Government took because it thinks that this project requires joint funding. This State Government is working very hard to secure that funding and it will deliver the Broome port expansion if that federal funding is forthcoming. We earnestly urge the Leader of the National Party to contact the Deputy Prime Minister, who is the Minister for Transport and Regional Development, and seek his assistance in providing some of these resources. While the Leader of the National Party is at it, he might ask the Deputy Prime Minister if he would mind honouring his obligation, one that the Leader of the National Party’s party has promoted time and again in the Kimberley, to allocate the funds to construct the Ord River bridge. We are very concerned that undertakings that were largely promoted by the federal member for Kalgoorlie are not being met with any cash allocation. As was highlighted by the Opposition’s response to the previous question, the Opposition has made a complete U-turn. Previously, members opposite understood the need for federal contributions to these projects, but suddenly they have forgotten.
