NICHELIVING —
STATE ADMINISTRATIVE TRIBUNAL APPEAL AGREEMENT
660. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I ask a supplementary question. Will
the government now compensate other builders who have suffered the same root
cause and have funded the financial deficiencies themselves?
Ms R. Saffioti interjected.
The SPEAKER : Deputy Premier,
please desist!
Ms L. METTAM : This is a question
that was asked by a builder who went under.
Ms R. Saffioti interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member! Neither
of you continue!

The resolution that we have created
does no favours to Nicheliving; its owners cannot lay a single brick for
another decade. They are essentially out of
the building industry for the rest of their professional lives. That is an
appropriate penalty for them to pay for what they have done to those
customers. Every builder, by virtue of the deregistration process, and their
customers have access to home indemnity insurance. That is simply all that has
happened in this situation, except that on
this occasion, because of our leadership, that process has been brought forward
and customers will get relief much earlier.
I would have thought that was an
opportunity for particularly the Leader of the Opposition, who said that he has been championing the rights of these people
all along, and the member for Vasse to say that they support those people getting a roof over their heads months, and potentially years, before they
would have if we had allowed the process to run its course.
Ms L. Mettam interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please!
Mr R.H. COOK : It is
absolutely absurd that the member for Vasse seems to be perpetuating that this
is somehow a get-out-of-jail-free card for a builder who has lost their licence
and is unable to undertake any of the professional activities for which they
were trained and developed their company with for years. It is not; it is a severe
penalty that will take them out of the building industry for the next decade.
But what have we got in return?
Those people who access the home indemnity insurance fund will get a roof over
their heads. That should be the outcome that any decent thinking person should
be focused on with this issue. We have made other courageous moves. The
builders support loan facility, which allows other stressed builders to access
a loan scheme to complete buildings, is another important step that we have
taken. We will continue to take other brave, important and courageous steps to
provide relief to those customers who have been waiting years to have their homes built. I would have thought that
that would be the priority for any common, decent thinking person.
