STATE ECONOMY —
PROPERTY PRICES
1018. Mr D.C. NALDER to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. I would
like to refer to that article, which highlights that new builds in Western Australia
hit a 30-year low. What action is the government taking to directly assist this
important job-creating industry?

In answer to the question asked just
a moment ago, I advised the house of the huge project that Rio Tinto has
invested in, announced today. Last week I announced the Albemarle project, the
week before I announced the major aquaculture project in Geraldton and a couple
of weeks before that I announced the Eliwana project with Fortescue Metals
Group—one after another after another. They are all important signs of
confidence in the Western Australian economy.
It
is an oddity in Australia these days but we have Keystart. We have strong faith
in and support for Keystart, which ensures that first home buyers are
more strongly in the marketplace than they otherwise would be. Two things that
have occurred nationally in recent days might have an impact. Firstly, the
chaos and dysfunction that is occurring nationally might be affecting consumer
confidence. There is some truth that what is occurring in the federal
government does not help the state's economy. Secondly, the banking
royal commission exposed a number of banking practices by a lot of people in
the banking industry who might have behaved in ways that were inappropriate—the shadow Treasurer might
know something about that; he might be more familiar with those things than me—and that has had an impact on the supply of finance. I do not
think that has helped the state's economy.
I will summarise. We are not going
to throw more taxpayers' money at subsidies like the former government
did. We are going to strengthen the economy, and demand will follow.
