PREMIER'S COMMENTS
318. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the Minister
for Disability Services:
I refer to the Premier's
comments in today's The West
Australian about a budget blowout in the National Disability Insurance
Scheme.
(1) How much exactly is the blowout
that the Premier refers to?
(2) At this stage
what is the likely cost to Western Australia of a National Disability Insurance
Scheme in each of —
(a) 2016–2017;
(b) 2017–2018;
(c) 2018–2019; and
(d) 2019–2020?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question
(1) I understand
the Premier was referring to concerns about the long-term risks to the
financial sustainability of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, including
the risks arising from the very rapid transition from trial to full scheme in
other jurisdictions. As the newly appointed Minister for Disability Services, I
can assure the member that the state government remains committed to seeing
through the comparative trials of the NDIS in Western Australia. We are
pursuing a prudent rollout of the NDIS in this state that is both tailored to
the needs of Western Australians with disability and ensures long-term
sustainability.
(2) (a)–(d)
The state government is currently in negotiation with the commonwealth
government regarding the future rollout of the NDIS in Western Australia. The
modelling of future scheme costs is part of these discussions.
