I refer to the recent closure of the Northbridge tunnel and ask - (1) What did the contractors find in respect of the leaks in the tunnel? (2) What was done to remedy the problems? (3) What guarantees have been given that the problems will not recur, leading to further closures? Hon M.J. CRIDDLE

(1)-(3) The closure that occurred on the weekend is one of a series of routine closures that will help to overcome maintenance problems. There is some seepage in the tunnel and there will continue to be over a period of time. The closure from 9.00 pm on Saturday was successful. I checked with Main Roads Western Australia to see if there had been any inconvenience to the public and was told that it had not received one phone call of complaint. The operation went very well. There will be further maintenance to address the problem of seepage. The other lane will be closed this weekend for routine maintenance. The walls will be washed and maintenance will be carried out on the video cameras. We always knew this would have to happen.
