I refer the minister to the parolee who was arrested following the tragic shooting of a 21-year-old woman on 19 August. (1) Was the parolee on bail at the time of the shooting for offences committed while on parole? (2) If yes, what were the offences committed while on parole and what date was the parolee bailed? (3) Is the minister aware that the parolee was named as an offender in a police statement that alleges he was involved in a burglary on 11 February 2003? (4) Can the minister provide this House with a chronological history of the offender’s parole and breaches of either parole or bail since being released on parole? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for the question and for some notice of it. (1) Yes. (2) It is alleged that the offender in question stole a motor vehicle and drove without a licence. He was bailed on 22 July 2003. Ms S.E. Walker interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: The question about the burglary was question No 3, and I am getting to it. (3) The Western Australia Police Service has advised me that the offender was a person of interest in connection with two burglaries committed in February 2003. As I told the House last week, I have requested that the Police Service provide me with a report on its involvement in this matter. (4) The House will be aware that an independent inquiry has been established to inquire into the circumstances of the offender’s management by the Department of Justice. I expect to receive that report within a month.
