Racing and wagering—TAB
712. Mr Lachlan Hunter to
the Minister for Racing and Gaming:
I refer to reports
that the WA-owned TAB is haemorrhaging money. Its value has collapsed by almost
50% in three years, with job losses, state money cuts and regional race rounds
now at risk.
(1) Given the industry's deep concerns about
rising operating costs and unsustainable funding settings, what is the minister
doing to ensure that Racing and Wagering WA can continue to support
thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing?
(2) Will the minister provide certainty to the
sector by calling for a lift in the point-of-consumption tax return to
industry?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for his
question. As the member has acknowledged, racing in Western Australia confronts
the same challenges as racing right around the nation. There are diminishing
returns from wagering over time as practices in betting change. Increasingly,
there is less revenue generated from betting on races, be it thoroughbred,
harness or greyhounds, yet costs continue to escalate, as the member
identified. That is a challenge that is confronting Racing and Wagering Western
Australia, the agency that is responsible for the operational management of
racing in Western Australia, and I am working with it on addressing these
matters.
