I refer to the Government’s election commitment on the Rottnest Island Hotel. The minister will recall the commitment to ensure that any proposals for the redevelopment of the Rottnest Island Hotel site are transparent, include proper community consultation and are sensitive to the island’s heritage and environment. Can the minister advise what steps have been taken to implement this commitment? Mr BROWN

I thank the member for Innaloo for his question. The board of the Rottnest Island Authority and the Swan Brewery have been involved in negotiations following on from the request for proposals that was made about 18 months ago. Recently, however, the parties have agreed that the negotiations have reached a point at which the requirements of the island and those of the Swan Brewery are incompatible. On that basis the parties have agreed to terminate those discussions. The board of the Rottnest Island Authority has on that basis decided to terminate the selection process under the request for proposals. That leaves the question of the future of the hotel. The board intends to enter into full and open community consultation before returning to the market with potential options for the future of the hotel. I am advised by the chair of the Rottnest Island Authority that the board will consider options for the hotel and then present to the community several options to facilitate the consultation process. As the member for Innaloo pointed out, the Government committed itself to an open process of consultation with the community in considering the future of the hotel, and that commitment will now be implemented by the board of the Rottnest Island Authority. It is intended that some proposals will come forward for consideration by the community and that the board will give all Western Australians the opportunity to comment on what type of hotel refurbishment they would like to see. That process will involve a recognition of the needs of visitors, the important part the hotel plays on the island, and the significance of the heritage site on which it is located.
