1-2. The revised draft Beyond WAste 2030 strategy, and its accompanying Roadmap place significant focus on a resilient recycled organics sector, with the aim to increase the recycling of organic materials and facilitate the development of quality recycled organics and its end markets. A successful Food Organics/Garden Organics (FOGO) industry delivers quality FOGO-derived, supported end markets, and industry certainty through continued growth facilitated through organic waste from municipal sources. FOGO services are provided by 55 per cent of local governments in the Perth and Peel region, with this figure expected to increase by the end of 2025. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation estimates that 34 per cent of households in the Perth and Peel region have access to three bin FOGO services.
3. Through the Government’s Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program, payments of up to $25 per household are available to support local governments to provide better practice three bin kerbside collection systems.
Since 2021 six Local Governments and Regional Councils have received $932,193 for FOGO processing infrastructure from State Government WasteSorted Infrastructure grants and $509,400 from the WasteSorted Organics Infrastructure grants. A total of $5,858,914 has been provided to support FOGO processing capability through these two grant programs across both Local Government and the private sector.
The State and Commonwealth Governments are also contributing $1 million each towards Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council’s new FOGO processing plant at the Red Hill Waste Management Facility to process up to 30,000 tonnes of FOGO each year.
