POLICE —
FORUMS — ATTENDANCE
1220. Hon SAMANTHA ROWE to the
Attorney General representing the Acting Minister for Police:
I ask this question on behalf of Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson, who is away on urgent parliamentary
business. I refer to the Acting Minister for Police's letter dated 20
October 2014.
(1) Why has
ministerial permission been denied for police to attend my forum on Wednesday,
5 November 2014?
(2) Why was
ministerial approval given for police to attend a similar forum hosted by the
member for Morley on Thursday, 4 September 2014?
(3) Why should
these decisions not be made by the Commissioner of Police to avoid any
perception of bias or political interference?
(4) Is the
Acting Minister for Police prepared to review his decision or refer it to the
Commissioner of Police; and, if not, why not?

On behalf of the Acting Minister for Police, I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(4)
The minister and the Commissioner of Police are conducting community forums in
both metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia. These forums offer
the local community an opportunity to discuss local crime issues and provide an
overview of the new model of policing, designed to improve front-line officer
availability. However, if the honourable member would like a briefing on local
policing issues prior to her forum, the minister would be more than happy to
arrange for local police to provide one.
