SENIORS, SAFETY AND SECURITY INITIATIVES
Can the minister inform the House of the Government’s initiatives on the safety and security of seniors in our community? Mrs ROBERTS

I thank the member for Innaloo for the question; he has certainly been a great advocate for community safety within his electorate. It was a commitment of this Government to make our community a safe place for everyone to enjoy, particularly our seniors, who have made such a valuable contribution to our community. Recently, I had the pleasure of launching the west metropolitan police district’s security awareness package. The package contains general information on home security and personal safety. In addition, it contains detailed information on safety and security for seniors. It outlines many of the precautions that seniors can take to ensure the safety of their homes and lifestyle. It also outlines precautions that seniors can take when shopping and banking, and strategies for the prevention of assaults. As part of the security awareness package, seniors are encouraged to register on the police district’s seniors register. Registered seniors can then have a detailed security check conducted on their homes, with the assistance of the Western Australia Police Service Pipe Band. The band’s sworn and unsworn officers perform the security appraisals using a check list that is contained in the package. The officers then outline to the seniors safety tips and precautions. This security awareness package is a positive initiative that is aimed at providing reassurance to the community through high profile policing. I take this opportunity to thank the Commissioner of Police and the pipe band for their commitment to community-based policing programs. The pipe band now divides its time equally between performing and supporting core policing functions through providing assistance to police districts.
