BEELIAR WETLANDS —
ROE 8
889. Mrs L.M. O'MALLEY to the Minister for Planning:
Before I ask my question, on behalf
of the member for Morley, I acknowledge the students and teachers from Dianella
Secondary College.
I
refer to the overwhelming mandate from the people of my electorate for the
government to stop the flawed and uneconomical Roe 8 project and the concerns
of my constituents, which were ignored by the previous Liberal–National government. Can the minister outline to the
house how the legislation introduced today to amend the Beeliar Wetlands metropolitan
region scheme will deliver on the McGowan Labor government's mandate to
not proceed with this destructive project?

I thank the member for Bicton for
that question and acknowledge the work she did with key stakeholders and
community groups over nine months to help develop a strategy for that area.
Following that consultation and the
work undertaken by the member and affected groups, today is a recognition of
holding the Beeliar Wetlands for future generations. We can stand proud and
acknowledge that we made a commitment to the people and now we are implementing
that commitment to stop Roe 8 and Roe 9 and preserve the area for future
generations. Of course, it is a comprehensive package. It is about not only
preserving that area, but also looking at how we can improve the efficiency of
truck and freight movements across the entire district. That is what we are focusing on and why we are doing so much work with
the Freight and Logistics Council of Western Australia to reduce trucks on
roads and move more freight on rail. We have already made big achievements, but
I want to do so much more because we really believe that putting more freight
on rail will reduce the pressure on our roads. We are looking at intermodal
facilities and where they are developed and of having a strategy to ensure that
they work together. We are talking to distribution centres, looking at where
they are located —
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : How about you
keeping quiet, member for Bateman. I call you to order for the second time. You
have already got one.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : We are also
looking at the time at which containers arrive and depart and how we can manage
those movements to try to reduce peak activity. Of course, we are also planning
for the outer harbour. It is a multifaceted approach to improve truck and
freight movements across the metropolitan area.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
