MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES
Dr G.G. JACOBS

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Wanneroo for his interest in, and concern for, the emotional wellbeing of the people of Kingsway Tourist and Caravan Park. Members may remember that I presented the Council of Official Visitors’ report in a ministerial statement I made last week. The report identified significant inadequacies and deficiencies in the care of, and accommodation for, people with mental health problems. I say at the outset that the Chief Psychiatrist and the Chief Psychiatrist’s office, as well as the medical teams, nursing staff and support staff, do a magnificent job in these facilities. However, the report identified some significant problems with the accommodation at the Bentley adolescent unit; for instance, there have been concerns with cleanliness; banana beds, whereby the bed frames are in such a bad state that their configuration has become curved; half-mast shower curtains; and poor privacy. There is a litany of concerns with the Bentley adolescent unit. Mr R.H. Cook : Did you see the beds? Dr G.G. JACOBS : The deficiencies and inadequacies in that unit alone that have been identified in this report concern me. The minister in the previous government was invited to visit this facility as a matter of urgency. Mr J.N. Hyde interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, member for Perth! Dr G.G. JACOBS : In the fullness of time, the minister in the previous government visited the facility and recognised and was shocked at the state of the unit. To his credit — An opposition member: To whose credit? Dr G.G. JACOBS : To the credit of the minister of the day, if the member would listen, some changes were made at the Bentley unit. There are more changes to be made. I have visited the Geraldton mental health unit, the Bunbury unit and other units throughout the state. I intend to look at the Bentley adolescent unit to see what other changes need to be made to the standard of accommodation. As this report identified, the accommodation facilities are inadequate. I also give an undertaking that I will visit on 24 December the adult unit at the John Milne Centre, the Graylands Hospital unit and the Bentley adolescent unit.
