COASTGUARD VESSELS, FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
I refer the Premier to his response to my question yesterday regarding his support for a United States-style coastguard, in which he stated that $450 million would be invested in new coastguard vessels. (1) Is the Premier aware that the work for replacement of the Fremantle-class patrol boats, worth up to $450 million, has been put out to tender by the Howard Government, and will proceed independently of any supposed coastguard proposal? (2) Has the Premier been advised by his federal Labor counterpart Kim Beazley that federal Labor proposes to spend an additional $450 million on coastguard vessels, or was the Premier deliberately misleading the people of Western Australia yesterday? Dr GALLOP

(1)-(2) This is extraordinary. We have a contest going on at the national level and the Australian Labor Party wants to improve the way in which we defend the coastline of Western Australia through the provision of this coastguard service. I am very interested to see how the tender process proceeds for the Fremantle patrol boats. It is interesting that we have not heard one little whisper or murmur from members opposite about the Commonwealth Government’s choosing South Australia as the site for the refitting of the Collins-class submarines. I do not care who is in power in Canberra, whether it is the coalition or the Labor Party, I will vigorously support the interests of Western Australia. The demeanour of the Leader of the Opposition and his deputy is very interesting. I take great delight in being depicted as Robin Hood and my good friend the Treasurer as Friar Tuck. It is fantastic. I cannot wait to see the next Alston cartoon. Several members interjected. Dr GALLOP: Members should wait until Alston trains his sights on cranky Colin and desperate Dan. That will be interesting. We will have old grumpy chops and his desperate neighbour. The new Commonwealth Government will invest in a coastguard service, and members on this side want to ensure that Western Australian interests win the related contracts.
