VELA LUKA PARK, SPEARWOOD, WASTE MATERIAL
I need to apologise to Hon Tom Stephens. I asked this question the other day, thinking that it had gone through when it had not. (1) Could the minister advise the Parliament of the level of contamination in the waste material from Vela Luka Park in Spearwood which is currently being stored at Waste Stream Management? (2) Could the minister then advise how the Government proposes to dispose of this toxic waste material? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

On behalf of the Hon Tom Stephens I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Minister for the Environment and Heritage has been advised by the Department of Environmental Protection that the material contains an average poly aromatic hydrocarbon concentration of 9.3 grams per kilogram, with an average benzo(a)pyrene concentration of 0.4 grams per kilogram. (2) A request for proposal for the treatment, transport and disposal of this material closed on 7 March 2002. A preferred tenderer has been selected and the Department of Industry and Technology is now finalising this recommendation. It is expected that the successful tenderer will be appointed to undertake this work in early May 2002.
