I thank the member for the question and for her continued
interest in areas concerning her constituents. Last Saturday, I had pleasure,
as an avid cyclist, in releasing the final ''Western Australian Bicycle
Network Plan 2014–2031'' catering for the expansion of WA
cycling facilities and growing cycling requirements over the next few decades.
I would like to share a few interesting statistics with the house. Over 400 000
Western Australians cycle at least once a week, and those cycling trips are
expected to double over the next five years. In the last three years, we have
seen an increase of nearly 30 per cent of people cycling on principal shared
paths. Therefore, it is highlighting the importance of cycling as a mode of
transport in Western Australia. Over the period 2013–17, the government
has allocated $47.1 million to the principal shared path program, local
government grants and Perth CBD projects.
In relation to the electorate of Belmont, there are two
specific projects that I would like to share information on at this point.
First is the $16.6 million to be spent on cycling infrastructure on Tonkin Highway
and Leach Highway as part of the Gateway WA project that is currently underway.
One of our election commitments for the area of Belmont —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Mandurah, you will be on your bicycle if you do not stop shouting
out! I call you to order for the first time. Member for Girrawheen!
MR D.C. NALDER :
Finally, on that commitment to the electorate of Belmont, there is $1.1 million
towards the construction of a shared path on West Parade, South Guildford, to
provide safe and efficient access for the community, particularly children, to
local facilities and amenities, including Guildford Primary School. The project
will be delivered by the City of Swan, with a construction program for late
2014. Implementation of the plan is well underway, and I, along with the

Tabling of Paper
Mr
W.J. JOHNSTON : Mr Speaker, it appears that the minister is reading
his answer. I wonder whether you could ask him to table the document.
The
SPEAKER : Minister, is that your notes or is it an official document?
MR
D.C. NALDER : It is personal notes that I have scribbled down and
that I would like to refer to.
The SPEAKER :
Personal notes. Right. You do not have to table them. Carry on, thanks.
MR D.C. NALDER :
Thank you, Mr Speaker.
Debate Resumed
MR D.C. NALDER :
The additional point that I would like to add is that I have also had
discussions with the minister responsible for the Office of Road Safety, and
requests to my department, to take an active approach for the safety of all
users of principal shared paths and cyclists on roads.
