I refer to lives lost due to melanoma and commend the Government for
finally announcing a date banning commercial solariums by 1 January
2016, albeit year later than the rest of
the country, and I note that there is no detail in the budget re: compensation and
ask: (a) what is the total budget allocation to provide
compensation to commercial tanning salon owners; (b) is this compensation already in the 15/16 budget or
will it require new and additional funds, if so, how much in total has been allocated for compensation; (c) what is the actual compensation amount that will be
provided per bed; (d) will there be a two tiered compensation scheme
which has been introduced in other states like Queensland essentially providing
more compensation for those owners who voluntarily surrender their tanning bed
licenses earlier as an incentive, and reduced/lesser amount of compensation for
those who continue operating up until the date they become illegal; and (e) will the Department of Health require commercial
tanning beds to be physically destroyed/physically surrendered as part of the
compensation package or how will they be disposed of eg. Will anything prevent
commercial tanning bed owners on-selling beds for private use and causing more
skin cancer?

(e) To be eligible for the financial assistance package the sun tanning units must be surrendered. There is no current legislation that prevents the sun tanning units from being sold for private use.
