Notwithstanding these arrangements, the State Government has embarked on a new initiative aimed to secure an electricity provider for three remote Aboriginal communities as part of a pilot project. The electricity provider will have full responsibility for operation, maintenance and capital enhancement of the power infrastructure in the communities. It will ensure that modern, efficient and reliable power facilities will be constructed in the designated large remote communities, with power supplied to consumers at the uniform tariff. This initiative will be undertaken as a pilot project with scope to expand it as an ongoing programme in subsequent years. With regard to Western Power's position in respect to upgrading of electricity in North West locations such as Broome and Derby, Western Power has already advised the communities of Broome and Derby that it will continue to supply power and meet customer requirements for as long as is necessary whilst the Government considers its power supply options for the region. (2) A Derby Tidal Power Project will only be considered as a possible power solution for the West Kimberley following the outcome of the Derby Tidal Scoping Study and the response from the Commonwealth Government on the possibility of financial support. The State Government will consider the Study's findings and also seek advice from Western Power on the matter in due course. It is not appropriate for a Derby Tidal Power Project to be considered by either the State or Western Power in isolation of these other events.
