CARERS WEEK
825. Mrs G.J. GODFREY to the
Minister for Seniors and Volunteering:
Before I ask my question I would like to welcome 12 members
of the carers group, Lend an Ear, from Belmont, who enjoyed lunch today.
They do a very good job in Belmont.
This week is Carers Week. Can the minister please update the
house on some of the activities taking place in recognition of carers and the
support provided by the Liberal–National government to carers across
Western Australia?

I thank the member for Belmont for her question and her
support of carers in Western Australia. It was great to see her hosting for
lunch some carers in our community. Carers Week runs from 11 October through to
17 October. There are 310 000 carers in our community. They could be caring for
a husband, a wife, a person with a chronic illness or a disabled child.
Anywhere throughout Western Australia there are carers doing fantastic work in
the roles that they do. My own father-in-law is a full-time carer for my
mother-in-law, who is in the later stages of Alzheimer's disease; I
know firsthand the struggle he goes through being a full-time carer. The
government is very committed to ensuring that carers in our community are
acknowledged and supported. This year the Liberal–National government
has given over $842 000 to Carers WA through the Department of Local Government
and Communities. That goes towards helping with not only counselling, phone and
face-to-face services, but also, and more importantly, to giving respite to
these carers so they can get some time away for themselves. One of the key
issues for carers in the community who are doing that work is to ensure they
get the opportunity to spend some time on their own, such as at a sport they
enjoy doing, and ensuring they can get out and enjoy some freedom. It is
important to acknowledge the great work that carers do. Right throughout this
week, events will occur all throughout Western Australia. Next Saturday there
is a free family fun day and expo. Information for those events is available on
my website and also from Carers WA. Over $50 000 has been given to small groups
throughout Western Australia to put on events to recognise the great work that
carers do in our community.
I would like to acknowledge that a new chairperson, Esme
Bowen, will start on the ministerial Carers Advisory Council. I met with Esme
this afternoon. As members know, she is the president of the RAC and has also
taken the role as the chair of my carers advisory board. It is really good to
have the benefit of her experience and I wish her all the best. Finally, I will
sum up by saying that I acknowledge the great work that carers do in our
community. It is a fantastic opportunity to recognise them. All the members who
have carers in their community and their electorates should make sure they take
the opportunity this week to recognise the work they do.
