Question regarding the timeline for government funding of infrastructure (rail, road, water) for the Oakajee Industrial Site, a preferred port site in the mid-west. The answer indicates ongoing planning but no firm funding commitment until industry take-up is confirmed, suggesting industry should primarily fund infrastructure.

OAKAJEE INDUSTRIAL SITE - INFRASTRUCTURE
This is a follow-up question from question without notice 131 I had previously asked. I hope the parliamentary secretary has an answer. Given the obvious requirement for a new industrial area in the mid-west and the minister’s announcement that Oakajee is the preferred port site, when will the government fund the rail, road and water to the industrial park? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the member for some notice of this question. In answer to a similar question last year, the minister advised that a whole-of-government approach is being taken on the future development and management of a port industrial estate at Oakajee. Since then, a project team has been established to examine the port and rail proposals for iron ore exports. In parallel, LandCorp is preparing a structure plan for the industrial estate. These exercises cover the future needs for rail, road, power, water, gas and other services for the area. Until there is some certainty about the take-up by industries of land and port facilities, no decision will be made about the nature and timing of funding, although the government’s position is that industries should, in general, fund their own requirements or contribute proportionately to shared infrastructure or joint services.
