I refer the minister to the Labor Party’s election policy for Ningaloo in which it promised that the water supply at a number of Ningaloo towns would be reviewed. (1) Has that review been undertaken; and, if so, what was the outcome? (2) Does the minister agree that the quality of water in these towns places residents at considerable risk; and, if so, why? Hon TOM STEPHENS

(1)-(2) The Water Corporation has implemented a five-year program involving the expenditure of $15 million to tackle the issues referred to in the question. The Leader of the Opposition knows that the water issues facing the Murchison communities must be addressed. Of course, that includes the nitrates and the water aesthetics. The Water Corporation’s decision to spend that money to tackle those issues should produce immediate results. The 2 November edition of The Geraldton Guardian reports the local health surveyor for the Murchison, Mr Bill Atyeo, welcoming the Water Corporation’s decision and indicating that at last progress will be made in this area. I hope the Leader of the House will join me in welcoming that progress.
