Yesterday the Minister for Fair Trading confirmed that he had given false evidence to the Gunning inquiry wrongly impugning the member for Fremantle. What action has the Premier taken or does he intend to take against the minister, or is it his view that a minister who gives false evidence to a quasi-judicial inquiry can mockingly dismiss it as an oversight? Mr COURT

I am not aware of the minister saying that he had given false evidence. Mr McGinty: He said clearly in this House yesterday that if he did, it was an oversight. Mr COURT: If the minister did, it was an oversight. I am sure that if the minister, who gave evidence for a day at that inquiry - Mr McGinty: Are you going to defend him now? Are you going to get into bed with him? If you want to get into bed with perjurers, you deserve what you get. The SPEAKER: Order! Yesterday I required members to withdraw when words like “liar” and “perjurer” were used. While the member who made the comment did not directly impugn another member, I draw members’ attention to those things. Shortly we will have a serious debate and there will be plenty of opportunity for members to air a whole lot of issues. Mr COURT: I have been in this House long enough to see the member for Fremantle get into the gutter on many occasions. I am sure that if the minister said something he wanted to correct or change, he would go through a proper process. I have also been in this House long enough to know that when the member for Fremantle starts carrying on in the way he is, he has made the decision to go for the personality. He has done that on a number of occasions with a number of people. I have been around long enough to know that when he acts in the way he is currently acting, he has got trouble.
