(i) Interstate market - refers to travel to Western Australia by Australian residents who live in Australian States or Territories other than Western Australia. (ii) Intrastate market - refers to travel to Western Australia by Australian residents who live in Western Australia. (iii) Domestic market - refers to travel to Western Australia by all Australian residents (both interstate and intrastate). As illustrated, from 1999 to 2005, Western Australia has experienced a higher growth in total visitor expenditure (15.1%) compared to Australia overall (14.6%), and Western Australia's share of total tourism market expenditure in Australia over this period has varied between 9.0% and 9.7%. Table 1 - Expenditure by Visitors to Western Australia and Australia 1999-2005 ($millions) [see tabled paper no] Caution should be used when interpreting market share over time, as almost all States and Territories have experienced a decline in market share of international visitors. This is because there has been a general trend over time for international visitors to visit fewer States and Territories during their trip to Australia. As a consequence, it is recommended that percent growth in visitor numbers over time be used to compare the performance of each State and Territory. Based on this comparison, Western Australia has performed equal third out of all States and Territories at 15.1% growth in international visitors from 1999 to 2005, behind only Tasmania (32.0%) and Victoria (24.8%). Table 2: International Visitors and Market Share to each State and Territory and Australia (1999-2005) [see tabled paper no] Please note the year 2006 is still in progress therefore visitor statistics are not available.
