I thank the member for the question.
The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for Mines and
Petroleum.
(1) There are 1 065 pending
applications at different stages of assessment.
(2) There is a 35-day
objection period under the Mining Act 1978 and a four-month notification period
under the commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. If the application for a mining
tenement includes any reserve land, time for referral to other ministers under
sections 23 to 26 of the Mining Act 1978 must be considered. The processing
period within the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety for
mining tenement applications is targeted for a maximum of 65 working days.
(3) This length
of time is required to ensure that applications are processed in accordance
with the Mining Act 1978 and the future act procedures of the commonwealth
Native Title Act 1993 are satisfied prior to grant.
