The Minister Replied:
Hospitals in the West Australian public sector are at varying stages of introducing emergency department diagnostic data capture systems. However, the majority of hospitals report that during the financial year 1999/2000, 859 people presented to emergency departments in Western Australian hospitals as a result of being bitten by a dog.
In the same period, of the total number of people attending hospital Accident and Emergency departments as a result of being bitten by a dog, 281 were admitted for inpatient treatment.
