Livestock industry—Transport accidents
1025. Hon Amanda Dorn to
the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the
tragic accident on 15 October 2025 when a man lost his life on Albany Highway
between Mount Barker and Narrikup involving a livestock truck carrying sheep.
(1) How many animals were involved and how many
were injured or killed in this incident?
(2) What protocols are currently in place to
ensure the welfare of animals involved in transport accidents?
(3) Which agency holds
primary responsibility for coordinating the emergency response and welfare
oversight in such incidents?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The truck was carrying 235 sheep and 13 sheep
died.
(2)–(3) The management of the scene of a
motor vehicle accident is the responsibility of the Western Australia Police
Force. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)
provides support as required. In the recent Mount Barker incident, DPIRD
livestock inspectors and the senior animal welfare compliance veterinarian
attended. For larger scale incidents, the Animal
Welfare in Emergencies: State Support Plan may be activated.
