KARRATHA — HOUSING DEVELOPMENT
I refer the minister to the new dwellings under development around the town of Karratha. (1) What infrastructure has been put in place to ensure the new developments are not affected by flooding or tidal surges? (2) Was modelling or research on the potential for flooding or tidal surges undertaken prior to the approval of these developments? (3) If yes to (2), will the minister table this modelling of research? Hon WENDY DUNCAN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) All developments built by LandCorp in Karratha have been built to comply with the coastal setback policy of the Department of Planning and are within the storm surge line set by the Shire of Roebourne. (2) For approved developments no modelling or research was undertaken by LandCorp. For future projects, LandCorp is arranging for aerial contour surveys to be conducted and submissions from suitably qualified coastal engineering and hydrology companies have been requested with submissions closing on 2 November 2010. These submissions will lead to a comprehensive study that will address whether current limitations on land for development can be adjusted and whether that will release more land for housing. Any decision to amend the development areas and/or levels will ultimately rest with the Western Australian Planning Commission. (3) Yes, when the surveys and reports are completed. However, the completion date is yet to be confirmed.
