YOUTH
CONNECTIONS PROGRAM — FUNDING CESSATION
622. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Leader of the House representing the Minister for Training and Workforce Development:
I refer to the Abbott government's
recent budget decision to cease funding to the very successful Youth
Connections program, which assists secondary students who have disengaged from
the school system back into training and employment.
(1) Has the
Minister for Training and Workforce Development raised concern with his federal
colleagues about the gap the loss of the Youth Connections program will create
in services in WA?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) If yes to (1), what was the
response?
(4) Is the minister
aware whether any of his WA ministerial colleagues have raised concern about
the loss of the Youth Connections program?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) No.
(2) The
commonwealth's 2014–15 budget outlined savings of over $1 billion
through the cessation or non-renewal of a range of commonwealth programs and
national partnerships in the vocational training sector. The Youth Connections
program was administered by the commonwealth and was one of many programs to be
cut. The Minister for Training and Workforce Development has been in contact
with the commonwealth Minister for Industry about supporting youth training
initiatives, including a request at the first Council of Australian Governments'
Industry and Skills Council meeting for the commonwealth to increase its
support of young people. The Minister for Training and Workforce Development
will continue to advocate for more commonwealth support for young people.
(3) Not applicable.
(4) No.
