DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, FUNDING FOR REFUGE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES
In a media release dated 14 November 2001 the Minister for Women's Interests stated that the women’s refuge groups will receive $90 000 a year, and an additional $2 million will be provided to assist women leaving a violent situation to start a new life, plus $400 000 for counselling services for children exposed to domestic violence. (1) How will the extra $2 million be used and what agency will be in charge of those funds? (2) How will the extra $400 000 for counselling services for children exposed to domestic violence be used, and how and where will families access this service? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

(1) An additional $1 million over four years will be spent enhancing follow-up services for people leaving refuges to assist them to re-establish in the community. A further $1 million over four years will be spent on women’s refuge services. The Department for Community Development has been consulting with peak domestic violence bodies and service providers on the design and location of new services. Non-government agencies will receive the funding and provide the services. The department will have responsibility for management of these funds. (2) The minister is currently considering options for the expenditure of this funding and will make an announcement in due course.
