I refer to the minister’s arbitrary and discriminatory decision to provide a lower increase in state funding to some non-government schools than others - Mr E.S. Ripper: Would you reverse that decision? Mr J.H.D. DAY: We would do it in a different way. The question continues - (1) Will the minister confirm that his decision is based on ideology and prejudicial views rather than reality? (2) Is the minister aware that most boarding schools will receive a lower increase in funding under his decision, thereby discriminating against families from rural areas required to send their children to boarding school in order to meet their education needs? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I thank the member for Darling Range for his question and his continuing interest in educational issues. (1) No. (2) No, but I will tell the member what happened. The category 1, 2 and 3 schools to which he referred all got an increase. It was less of an increase than they would have received had we simply applied the formula as it was applied in previous years. The total reduction from what would have been provided had we applied the formula was $300 000 or $400 000. The impact across the system on the individual schools is almost negligible. I do not think that I have received any direct negative feedback from the schools involved. I may have one or two letters - I do not want to mislead - but it has been virtually nothing. I make no apologies for it; it was absolutely the right decisions to make. I reject the basic allegation implicit in the question.
