(1)–(2) I
thank the member for the question. It is about a really important measure that
was one of the centrepieces of our budget last week. On Friday, I announced,
with the Premier, funding arrangements for the Future Health Research and
Innovation Fund. That will see over $126 million invested in medical research
over the forward estimates. The Premier and I made this announcement at the
Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. Just across the road from the
Harry Perkins Institute is the Telethon Kids Institute. Members might be interested
to know that between those two organisations, over 1 000 people are employed in
medical research. That means that over 1 000 people are employed in the vital
task of improving clinical outcomes for Western Australians. We had a patient
with us, David. The only reason he is alive today is that we are undertaking a range
of early clinical trials which means that patients like David can get the
benefit of these world-leading medical research projects.
This is an important outcome for
patients in Western Australia. But it also means that we are attract the best
and brightest, and that we retain our best and brightest in our medical
workforce, practising at the forefront of their craft, making sure they bring
that to the bedside, and ensuring that we are significantly improving medical
services in Western Australia. This is an important outcome for putting
patients first. A 2017 evaluation of 25 National
Health and Medical Research Council-funded clinical trials found that if the
outcomes of these trials were implemented in the wider population, every dollar
awarded by the NHMRC in grants would result in $51.10 in economic return. That
is how important the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund is. It means
jobs for Western Australia. It means commercialisation of research is
undertaken in this state, which produces returns for this state and continues
to diversify the economy. This is part of the McGowan government's
drive to make sure that we have a secure, diversified economy, with high
quality jobs for people in this state. The Future Health Research and
Innovation Fund will not only improve health services and put patients first;
it will attract the very best and brightest to practise their craft in this
state, continue to grow jobs in our health sector and continue to diversify the
economy.
