REVIEW
871. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Attorney General:
I refer to section 57 of the
Coroners Act 1996, which requires the Attorney General to carry out a review of
the act every fifth anniversary after commencement.
(1) When was the last review
completed?
(2) When is the next review
expected to be completed?
(3) How many of the recommendations made in the Law
Reform Commission of Western Australia's Review of Coronial Practice in Western Australia: Final report: Project No 100 remain
to be implemented?
(4) Is it intended that a bill to amend the act be
introduced in the remaining session of the forty-first Parliament?
(5) Will the bill implement recommendations 83 to 87
of the final report, aimed at strengthening and s upporting the coroner's
prevention role?

I
thank the member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been
provided to me by the Attorney General.
(1) The final
report on the review of the Coroners Act 1996 was tabled in the Legislative
Council on 15 December 2021.
(2) The review
will be completed as soon as practicable, taking into account various factors,
including, but not limited to, government priorities and resources,
consideration and possible implementation of any prior review recommendations,
and the time that has elapsed since the last review was completed.
(3) It is not
possible to provide the member with a response in the time available. It is
requested that the member put this question on notice.
(4)–(5) The drafting of bills and their introduction to
Parliament is a decision of cabinet and is cabinet-in-confidence.
