I thank the member for Mount Lawley for the question. I just
acknowledge that it is the member for Mount Lawley's birthday today!
Mr R.H. Cook interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Kwinana!
Mr T.K. WALDRON :
Happy birthday, member for Mount Lawley!
I will start by acknowledging Perth Glory's strong
start to the season: it stands top of the A-league at the moment; let us hope
that is a sign of things to come!
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Kwinana, I am formally going to call you to order for
the first time today. I do not need to hear you talking across the chamber when
another member is on his feet answering a question.
Mr
T.K. WALDRON : I was just acknowledging Glory's great start to the
season. The Perth Wildcats are also on top, and I am looking forward to that
team playing its first home game at the new Perth Arena on 16 November.
Members would be aware that the
first stage of the nib Stadium redevelopment involves the replacement of all
temporary stands and seating, and in its place there will be a fully serviced,
brand-new eastern stand, which will be fully covered. That will provide 10 000
spectator seats, and spectators will have a fantastic experience in that new
stand. It will contain premium amenity, corporate reserves and a barbecue area,
and I think it will be very, very popular.
We have also been able to deliver a
new permanent uncovered southern stand, which is actually already close to
completion, and we will be installing permanent seating in the northern bowl,
in front of the old shed, shortly. Work on both the northern and southern ends
is in addition to the original scope; we have been able to do that due to the
great work of the Department of Sport and Recreation and Building Management
and Works, and we can deliver that extra stand within the original budget,
which is a bonus for our rectangular-sports lovers.
The construction for the new eastern and southern stands
commenced in July 2012, and I just wanted to let everyone know that we
delivered the partially completed southern stand in time for Perth Glory's
first game last weekend. Glory supporters were able to sit in a big part of
that stand on the weekend. The new seating in the southern bowl was utilised
last weekend, so the whole front of the southern bowl is already complete. The
commencement of construction at the eastern stand is underway. Also,
installation of services and drainage to the pitch perimeter has taken place,
and the Fred Book maintenance works and gate 1 heritage works have been
completed. That is a pretty good achievement in the first four months. I am
holding up a photograph of the new partially completed southern stand. Members
will see the green seats at the front. The seats at the top were utilised last
weekend.
Dr A.D. Buti :
Where are you going to sit?
Mr T.K. WALDRON : I
have not been along yet. I could not get there on Sunday but I am glad the
member for Mount Lawley did. It was another great victory.
It is a fantastic effort to get to
this stage in such a short time. The feedback I have received from patrons has
been terrific. The comments from fans have been really positive. I think
everyone is pretty excited about the progress and the prospect of a complete
stadium for next season. I heard the coach, Ian Ferguson, speak on radio. He
certainly expressed positive comments on the new development, which was great
to hear.
The capacity for Sunday's
fixture was in excess of 10 000 people, which was the figure we aimed for.
There were around 6 500 people seated out of that 10 000 capacity. The capacity
will increase incrementally as the redevelopment project continues. When completed,
the eastern stand will have a capacity of 20 500. I acknowledge that there will
be some disruption to Perth Glory this season—that is acknowledged. We
are working with Glory to determine the impact the redevelopment will have on
its operations.
Mr
M.P. Murray : What about compensation?
Mr
T.K. WALDRON : It is going very well. They are meeting with the Department
of Sport and Recreation; I expect that to be completed soon. When that is
worked through, the compensation payment will be taken to cabinet.
There will be some short-term
disruption. I have asked Perth Glory, VenuesWest, the Department of Sport and
Recreation and Allia Venue Management to sit down and work through a couple of
small issues, particularly the corporate boxes and the spectator amenity. The
longer-term benefits will far outweigh the short-term disruptions.
The redevelopment will be completed
in March 2013. BGC has met every target thus far; we are right on time. In
March 2013 the new seats in the eastern, southern and northern stands will be
wider and more comfortable. Viewing angles from new stands will mean more
spectators are closer to the game than ever before. There will be a much higher
quality of amenity. Two new video screens will also be unlike anything we have
seen in Perth before. Although there were initial issues, which I think were
worked through well, I look forward to a bright future for both Perth Glory and
Western Force at the new rectangular stadium, and hopefully one day a National
Rugby League team.
