The Department of Housing and Works advises:
1 (a) Housing for nurses is provided by the Health Department.
(b) 2212 allocated to the Department of Education and Training.
(c) 1002 allocated to the WA Police.
GROH also houses essential Government workers from 58 other agencies.
2 To improve the quality of GROH (Government Regional Officer Housing) housing and to provide additional housing, in 2006-07 the State Government committed to $60 million program to deliver 161 houses made up of 111 replacement houses and 50 new houses over three years. These funds are boosting and improving stocks in regional areas, including those areas experiencing the resources boom and also in remote Indigenous communities.
In 2007-08, a further $95.2 million was provided by the State Government towards the 161 houses committed in 2006-07 and to deliver a further 69 houses in areas of high demand over the next two financial years.
Since 2004/2005 and including this current financial year, GROH has completed 241 more housing units with a further 111 units to commence in 2008/2009. In addition GROH has secured a further 246 private lease properties since 1 July 2007, the majority of which are no more than 10 years old. Both of these strategies represent a comprehensive response to Government employees moving into country locations. In total, 111 properties have been replaced and 119 additional properties provided.
GROH is also spending $11 million in 2007/2008 to upgrade and refurbish existing GROH housing stock and GROH has a budget commitment of $8 million in 2007/2008 to address ongoing maintenance requirements.
GROH is working to provide DET with 99 properties. Forty of these will be satisfied by construction projects scheduled to complete between now and June 2009. The balance will be satisfied through private leases, future spot purchases or construction projects.
GROH is working to provide WAP with 61 properties. Twenty-one of these will be satisfied by construction projects scheduled to complete between now and June 2009. The balance will be satisfied through private leases, future spot purchases or construction projects.
3 A table of GROH properties in each non-metropolitan town or community is attached (See Tabled Paper No.:) .
Tenants of GROH properties may be charged a rent, which is not greater than the rent calculated under the Tenant Rent Setting Framework (TRSF) introduced in 2000. The amount of the subsidy varies between Departments and locations. Some Departments provide housing free of charge, for example police officers do not pay any rent in 65 locations across the State and teachers do not pay rent in 45 remote locations.
A table of the discount by location is attached. See Tabled Paper No.:
Rents for tenants in situ are also capped and cannot rise more than $10 per annum.
