I refer to the Premier’s objection to the proposed appointment of Mr Graeme Samuel as head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and, in particular, the Premier’s comments on television some time ago indicating his concern about the ability of Mr Samuel to protect consumers’ interests. I also remind the Premier of the findings of the Gunning and Temby inquiries that were highly critical of the former Ministry of Fair Trading and its complete failure to protect the investors in the finance broking industry. In the light of the Premier’s concern over Mr Samuel, can the Premier state whether he has the same concerns over the capacity of Pat Walker in his role as Commissioner for Fair Trading, given Mr Walker’s record of failure as the man in charge of the Ministry of Fair Trading during the finance broking debacle; and, if not, will the Premier share the basis of his confidence in Mr Walker with the rest of the community? The PRESIDENT: The minister may choose whether he wants to answer that question. It sounded like it was out of order. Hon KIM CHANCE
