MINE SITES — NUMBER AND REHABILITATION
I refer the minister to the article titled “Miners walk from blight on landscape”, in The West Australian of 13 September, which claims that there are 5 000 abandoned mines littering the state. (1) How many open-cut mines have been abandoned in Western Australia? (2) Of those, how many have been or are currently being rehabilitated? (3) Of the remainder, what action, if any, by government or any other party, is being taken to clean up these mines? (4) How many operational mines are there in Western Australia? (5) Of these, how many mines have environmental bonds, or similar, attached to them? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of the question, which was given yesterday. The answer yesterday was that the member place the question on notice because of the time that would be taken to collate the information. I have checked again today to see whether the information is available, and it is not, so I ask the member to put the question on notice. But I indicate to the member that I am not aware of where the 5 000 figure has come from.
