ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION ACTIVITIES —
GRANTS
227. Mr M.H. TAYLOR to the Minister for
Environment:
As somebody with a long history in
environmental science, I am proud to be part of a Liberal–National
government that continues to invest in community environmental initiatives.
With this in mind, can the minister please inform the house of the detail of
some of the recently announced grants for environmental restoration activities
in the Perth metropolitan area?

I thank the member for Bateman for
the question. I had the opportunity recently to announce a new round of grant
funding that will be specifically targeted at supporting community group
activities. We will try to aim the funding at those activities that will
support the restoration and the management of banksia woodlands across the
broader Perth metropolitan area and coastal plain. These funds have been made
available to us through an offset program; this is offset money. In order to
realise this offset, community groups are being encouraged to apply for funding
to restore and enhance areas of banksia woodland, with a particular emphasis on
providing habitat for Carnaby's cockatoos, as banksia woodland is
obviously key foraging habitat for those birds.
A total of $300 000 will be made
available for projects to be undertaken as of June this year through to September
2016. The funding band will provide a minimum of $5 000 up to a maximum of $20 000
to a community group.
Ms
M.M. Quirk interjected.
Mr
A.P. JACOB : The member for Girrawheen is absolutely right. I am glad that
members opposite are keeping track of this.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, you are becoming a bit of an echo in this
chamber. I do not want to hear anything more from you during this answer.
Mr
A.P. JACOB : It is very important that members in this house are aware of
this program. I am glad that the member for Girrawheen has already jumped on
it. We all have many community groups and friends groups within our electorates
who can benefit from this money. As I said, a band of $5 000 through to $20 000
in funding is available. Applications opened in early March and will close in a
couple of weeks. It is timely to remind members, who no doubt all have contacts
with friends groups and conservation groups in their electorates, that they
have only two more weeks to apply for this funding.
Community groups and interested
parties will also be able to access more detailed information on the department's
website about how to apply for a grant. Funding priority will be given to
projects that have a particularly high conservation value in banksia woodlands
or projects that will also consider buffers of other vegetation types around
banksia woodlands. Projects also need to be contained within a 45-kilometre
radius of Jandakot airport, obviously specifically linked to an offset program
at that site.
We are also looking at sites
containing rare species and the involvement of groups with a demonstrated
capacity and commitment to bushland conservation. This initiative will make an
important contribution to community conservation efforts across the
metropolitan area. I look forward to seeing the implementation of a range of
successful small projects across that footprint over the next two years.
Indeed, since coming to government in 2008, the Liberal–National
government has invested more than $9.3 million in protecting Western Australia's
three species of black cockatoos, with more than $7.7 million of that money
coming from developers for purchasing and rehabilitating private bushland or
for environmental offsets linked to development approvals such as this grants
program.
