WATER CORPORATION —
INFRASTRUCTURE — EXMOUTH
660. Ms M. BEARD to the Minister for Water:
I refer to current and future new
developments in Exmouth such as the much-needed workers accommodation.
(1) What steps
has the Water Corporation taken to guarantee there is and will be sufficient
water and sewerage to cater for residents, businesses and tourists in Exmouth?
(2) Is there a current
shortfall in supply, and what is the time frame to rectify this shortfall if
this is the case?

(1)–(2) I
thank the member. I am happy to take this question. I am just looking for some
notes. I am aware that there has been some planning on future water sources for
Exmouth. We have challenges across a number of our regional areas. It is
interesting that the member for Kalgoorlie asked me a previous question. I know
across the goldfields there has been a lot of discussion about water—the
quality of water, the availability of water and ensuring that communities as
well as industry have water now and in the future. Clearly, there are similar
issues in Exmouth and, in fact, across all of the midwest area, including to
Geraldton. There are issues of current water supplies having a limited horizon.
Members might also be aware that we are currently consulting on the next water
sources for Albany and the surrounding areas because those areas have a limited
life as well. In my previous answer to the member for Roe's question, I
referred to the impact of climate change on declining rainfall, precarious or
unreliable sources of water from rainfall
and use of groundwater. We have to plan for that in the future. This includes
Exmouth. Planning has been undertaken between the Water Corporation and
the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to look at the current
systems available, future sources needed and the necessary time frames. I am
happy to get back to the member with some more detail; I just do not have it in
front of me now.
