Will the minister advise what the Gallop Labor Government has been able to achieve in land releases in Kununurra? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

I was very pleased to go to Kununurra on the weekend and set the bulldozers rolling on the first land release in Kununurra for some 10 years. Under the previous Government, growth in Kununurra had stalled because the then Government was unable to resolve the native title issues or work constructively with the local Aboriginal groups. This Government is very pleased to provide this much needed stimulus to growth in Kununurra. Already dozens of people in Kununurra are waiting for homes. The Government has received expressions of interest from Argyle Diamond Mines Pty Ltd and a number of other companies for land that the Government is releasing. The first stage released 43 lots last weekend and the other two developments will involve the release of 109 lots. The Government has entered into a negotiated settlement with the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, and that has enabled this initiative to proceed. I pay particular tribute to the traditional owners of this lake side area who worked very well with LandCorp and the Department for Planning and Infrastructure to expedite heritage clearances on the site so that the project could proceed. The traditional owners attended the ceremony. As I have said previously, working constructively with the Aboriginal people in the Kimberley will progress development in the Kimberley.
