Does the minister support the Premier’s view that water restrictions in the Perth metropolitan region should remain in place forever? If so, why? If not, why not? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

AnswerView source ↗

I certainly support the Premier’s view, but the honourable member may be stating the Premier’s view a little strongly when he uses the word “forever”. The Government’s position is that we as a society should conserve water, we should not be overwatering and we should adopt reasonable conservation practices. I think this community has embraced that position. The current position of the water supply is such that the restriction regime, which was initiated by this Government in September 2001, is a very necessary precondition for the recovery of the State’s water supplies, both in terms of the amount of water in the dams and the aquifers that supply the underground water. There is no difference between our views. The Premier is doing a very good job in chairing the state water strategy and encouraging the community to engage in conservation practices.
