I refer to the report that Riverbank Prison is to be closed due to inadequacies identified by the Inspector of Custodial Services and the cost of making those good. (1) Is the report correct that Riverbank Prison is to close; if so, when will this occur? (2) Are the reasons correctly stated; if not, what are the reasons? (3) Are there any other prisons in a similar or worse state of repair - in particular, I draw the minister’s attention to Broome, Eastern Goldfields, Karnet and Pardelup; if so, what will happen to these prisons? (4) Is the minister aware that Baroness Stern, a world authority on imprisonment, described the programs for intellectually impaired prisoners at Riverbank as world’s best practice? (5) Will intellectually impaired prisoners currently in Riverbank continue to - (a) be separated from mainstream prisoners; (b) be placed in a protective environment; and (c) receive intensive education if Riverbank is closed? (6) If so, where, how and when will this occur? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS
