TOURISM — ABROLHOS ISLANDS
736. Hon DARREN WEST to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Tourism:
I refer to the Premier's
announcement regarding the Abrolhos Islands national park and the potential for
more tourism opportunities.
(1) Has any consultation
with stakeholders been undertaken regarding the expansion of tourism on the
islands?
(2) If yes to (1), who was consulted
and when were they consulted?
(3) If no to (1), why not?
(4) Has a report
on the viability of tourism on the islands been prepared; and, if yes, will the
minister table a copy?
(5) If no to (4), why not?

I am delighted to see that one
member from the other side actually cares about tourism. I would like to thank
him for asking the question.
Hon Stephen Dawson : Is that the answer?
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : It is part of the answer, yes.
Hon Ken Travers interjected.
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : Would you be quiet and just go home!
The PRESIDENT : Order, members!
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : The answer continues —
(1)–(2) The Premier has
spoken to a range of stakeholders regarding this initiative, including during
his visit to Geraldton in June this year. Additionally, access to and the
future of the Abrolhos Islands was an important part of the work of the Coastal
Towns and Settlements Cabinet Subcommittee, which consulted widely. Discussion
is ongoing between government ministers and their respective agencies—the
Department of Parks and Wildlife and the Department of Fisheries.
