I thank the member for Midland for that question. Liberal Party, look away!
This is about delivering infrastructure in the suburbs. Hands over your ears; this
is about delivering quality infrastructure and services in the suburbs. I know it
is something they do not like; they do not like delivering infrastructure and
services in the suburbs.
It was so
good today to see the Leader of the Opposition give the first question to the member
for Vasse, after yesterday's extraordinary move in which I believe the member
for Vasse had an idea for the matter of public interest, but do you know what?
The Leader of the Opposition—the strategic genius—came in to
read a letter from the federal member for Perth. That was the extent of the
attack yesterday! That was it.
Mr Basil Zempilas: Where's the business case?
Ms Rita Saffioti: Does the member want to do it again?
Suspend! Suspend! We will agree—
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, you do not get
to shout across the chamber. Please do not do that.
Ms Rita Saffioti: This is not the City of Perth
anymore, Leader of the Opposition. I have just seen that the new Lord Mayor has
announced a review into the culture at the City of Perth.
Several members
interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: I wonder why!
I will get back to all
the infrastructure and services we are delivering across the state and in the
suburbs. We toured the new Midland train station, which is an incredible
looking train station. Do members know what? The people of Midland deserve it.
I know the Liberal Party does not believe that people in the suburbs deserve
quality infrastructure, but we do. We have already seen the opening and
incredible use of the multi-deck car park. Just before Christmas, we will be
opening the bus interchange, which will be operating at pretty much full
capacity, and we will be opening Midland station on 22 February.
Again, like always
when opening new infrastructure, there will be disruption. We apologise in
advance that we will be closing the Midland rail line between Bayswater through
to Midland from 22 January to 22 February, as we do two things: basically, we will
bring in a new track to work with the existing tracks and we will demolish the old
existing Midland train station. I think many people will be celebrating that
day. No disrespect to the old Midland train station, but I think it is past its
use-by date. We will be undertaking that.
We will invite the
community to attend the opening on 22 February, , and I invite members of the
Liberal Party and the Nationals to come out and celebrate the new infrastructure
in the suburbs. Grab a sausage at the sizzle and go and look at the incredible
new facilities. It is another part of this Metronet jigsaw puzzle. In particular,
consider what it is going to do to incentivise private sector investment with
new housing, new business opportunities and a commitment to continue to deliver
world-class infrastructure around Western Australia.
