CORONAVIRUS —
MODELLING
101. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Premier:
Before I ask my question of the
Premier, on behalf of the Liberal Party, I first congratulate the member for
Moore for his election as Deputy Leader of the Nationals WA. With your
indulgence, Mr Speaker, I would also like to acknowledge
my visitors from Newborough Primary School who are in the gallery today. I am
patron of that school . I acknowledge
the principal, Mr John Worthy; deputy principal, Mr Nick Stenhouse; and Will,
Riley, Sophie and Noah, who are the student leadership team at the
school.
In The Weekend West , the Premier stated that the Department of Health has
conducted modelling on the coronavirus , which it is anticipated will
peak in August. Can the Premier now brief the house on the modelling and how
many Western Australians are estimated will have contracted coronavirus by the
peak in August?

Firstly,
can I also acknowledge and congratulate the member for Moore on his ascension
to the position of Deputy Leader of the Nationals WA, and can I congratulate
the National Party on such a wise decision!
Clearly, the coronavirus is a significant
threat both to the health of Australians and Western Australians, and also to
the world economy. We are now seeing an event that is growing rapidly before
our eyes all over the world. It is very, very important that we respond in a calm,
measured and considered way. That is the approach the government has taken
throughout this matter. We want to provide as much of the information that we
come into the possession of to the public as we can. Therefore, we have engaged
in an advertising campaign to inform people in print, on the radio and online.
We are providing significant updates on a daily basis—both the health
minister and me. We have appointed a pandemic
coordination unit within the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and we have
taken a whole range of initiatives across the health portfolio. The
advice I was provided, which was provided by the commonwealth Department of
Health, is that in late April there is a likelihood of community spread of the
illness, with the peak in that spread sometime in August–September.
Naturally, with these matters there is no way we can define the exact number of
people who might be affected. That is the advice provided by the commonwealth
Department of Health.
