PRESERVATION OF DEMERSAL SPECIES
This is a question that I thought I had asked last week but I had not. I refer to the minister’s recently announced management package for preservation of demersal species within the west coast bioregion. (1) Is a 50 per cent reduction of total fishing effort—all sectors—as recommended by the Department of Fisheries the agreed target by this government for the west coast bioregion? (2) If no to (1), why not? (3) If yes to (1), what percentage reduction in recreational fishing effort will have been achieved by the minister’s recently announced management package between October 2008 and the end of March 2009? (4) What does this percentage equate to in tonnes or kilos? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(4) The existing advice from the Department of Fisheries indicates that overfishing of demersal scalefish is occurring on the west coast and that catches need to be reduced by at least 50 per cent to ensure the long-term sustainability of those stocks. The government is undertaking a review of the stock assessment and the recreational management options. Upon completion of the review, the government will announce its targets and objectives for the future management of the west coast demersal scalefish fishery.
