TEACHERS —
SWITCH PROGRAM
662. Hon SAMANTHA ROWE to the
Minister for Education:
I am asking this question without notice, of which some
notice has been given, on behalf of Hon
Sally Talbot, who is away on urgent parliamentary business.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that primary school teachers seeking to transfer to secondary
teaching will require training to teach the new year 7 curriculum?
(2) To date,
how many primary teachers have been selected to commence teaching at secondary
level?
(3) Of these
teachers, how many have received training under the Switch program to teach
maths, science, and design and technology?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Under the
legislation, a teaching qualification enables a teacher to work in either a
primary or secondary setting. The Switch program provides training options for
teachers, based on their qualifications, skills and experience, to build
greater levels of content knowledge in specialist secondary subjects. As at 19 June
2014, 387 teachers are currently undertaking or have completed Switch training.
(2) Recruitment
is ordinarily undertaken in the second half of the year. However, 10 current
Switch participants have informed the Department of Education that they have
already won positions in secondary schools in their new specialisations and
have commenced in these new roles.
(3) Of these 10 teachers,
seven are training in secondary mathematics, one is training in design and
technology and one is training in secondary science. All are undertaking
graduate certificate courses.
