NORTH METROPOLITAN
HEALTH SERVICE BOARD — BUDGET MANAGEMENT
787. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the Minister for Health's
sacking of the North Metropolitan Health Service board under the pretext of
budget management, but in reality to parachute his good friend and mate Jim McGinty
into the position of chair. Can the minister confirm that contrary to his claim
that the North Metropolitan Health Service was the only service with fiscal
problems, every single WA health service blew its total cost of service in 2017–18
compared with the targets that he set, including the Child and Adolescent
Health Service by $31 million, South Metropolitan Health Service by $67 million,
East Metropolitan Health Service by $60 million, and WA Country Health Service
by $87 million? Can the minister confirm that and explain why he sacked the
board of the North Metropolitan Health Service but not the rest?

I think it is fairly obvious why we
have had a change of leadership at the North Metropolitan Health Service. We
have given that ample airing in this place, so I will not go too far into those
sorts of dealings other than to say that we are getting on and fixing health in
this state. We are fixing the mess that the former government left us, whether
it is the debacle that was its management of the Perth Children's
Hospital project, the contract it left in place at the children's
hospital for the car park, the runaway cost blowouts year on year or the
decreasing efficiency year on year. There has been one government that has
opened the children's hospital in good time upon coming to government.
There is one government that has taken charge of the health system to ensure
that we get good outcomes. There is one government that has actually produced
greater efficiencies in the health system as opposed to increasing
inefficiencies, and that is us.
