FORESTRY — NATIVE TIMBER PRODUCTION LEVELS —
PUBLICATION
916. Hon LOUISE KINGSTON to the Minister for Forestry:
I note the minister's
response to the question regarding the Standing Committee on Estimates and
Financial Operations and forestry statistics.
(1) Why has the
minister decided to end the publication of native forestry timber production
levels, which have been published since 1918?
(2) What
consultation was entered into with industry and other stakeholders in making
this decision; and, if there was no consultation, why not?
(3) Has the
minister considered that the production of native timber from mine sites and
ecological thinning might be of general interest and enhance accountability?
(4) Will the
minister continue to ensure that the Forest Products Commission publishes statistics
on sandalwood and the softwood sectors as in the past?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) Although there is not a statutory requirement to
publish annual production statistics, historically data was gathered
from the Forest Products Commission and the Department of Biodiversity,
Conservation and Attractions and published to demonstrate adherence to the
level of cut and sustained yield under the 10-year forest management plan as
part of commercial logging activities. Following the decision to end commercial
native forest logging under the forest management plan 2024–33,
production statistics will no longer be produced by the FPC. The quantity of
sandalwood harvested and licences for harvest are set and managed by DBCA.
