BALGA WORKS INQUIRY — DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING’S RESPONSE 97. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the Minister for Training: I refer to the Department of Education and Training’s response to the twelfth report of the Standing Committee on Estimates and Financial Operations on the “Balga Works Program”, which the minister tabled on Tuesday. (1) Is the minister satisfied that the department has adequately responded to all the recommendations of the standing committee? (2) If no to (1), what action will the minister take to ensure the response is adequate? (3) If yes to (1), why has the minister now rejected many of the recommendations that he supported as a member of that committee? Hon PETER COLLIER

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) I have looked at the Department of Education and Training response to the Balga Works report, and I am not satisfied with elements of that response. I will be talking with the Minister for Education about the department’s response to the Balga Works report. Hon Ken Travers : Were you not consulted before the report was tabled? Hon PETER COLLIER : No. Hon Ken Travers : As the Minister for Training, one of the ministers for the department — Hon PETER COLLIER : I am answering the member’s question. I was not consulted. I saw the report when it was tabled. I will discuss a few areas of the report with the Minister for Education. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich interjected. The PRESIDENT : Order! I am not sure whether members remember what I said the other day, but this is question time; it is not time for a debate. Some of the members who persist in interjecting when a minister is answering a question have been here for a long time—perhaps too long! Hon George Cash. Hon George Cash : I trust you were not referring to me, Mr President! I was not interjecting. The PRESIDENT : Hon George Cash, like a number of us, will be here for several more months.
